The legendary Hopi potter
Marcella Kahe has been producing pottery since 1940. Her unique
style has been recognized for years and was awarded the prestigious
Living Treasure Award as a potter in 1993 and has her work in
the Museum of Northern Arizona's collections
Kahe is a respected elder
woman of the Butterfly Clan. She lives atop First Mesa in the
village of Sichomovi. She is as traditionalist in pottery creation
as she is in her lifestyle.
She has been the inspiration
and teacher of both her famous daughter ( Karen Charley) and
daughter-in-law ( Gloria Kahe ). She produces few pieces today
and they are very much in demand. Three of her 13" bowls
sold at a recent Sotheby's auction from $3000 to $4000.
